Stockton State Park Marina
Sailing School FAQs

Q. What type of sailing school does Stockton State Park Marina have?

A. Our sailing school is an ASA (American Sailing Association) School. We are certified to instruct ASA 101, 103, 104, and 105 courses.

Q. What qualifications do your instructors have?

A. All of our instructors are ASA certified instructors who are also licensed coast guard captains.

Q. After I complete my classes, do I receive a certificate or a license?

A. The completion of your courses earns you a certificate in sailing skills, not a license.

Q. When is the sailing school season? What is the best time to come?

A. Our sailing school season runs late May through late September. Late July through August can be hot with little wind. September can be the nicest sailing month.

Q. When are classes scheduled? Can I do my class on a holiday weekend?

A. Classes are scheduled during the week or on the weekends. We try to work with your schedule. However, we do not offer classes on holiday weekends.

Q. I'm ready to schedule a class! What do I do?

A. First, email info@stocktonstateparkmarina.com. After March 1, you may continue emailing or call the marina at 417-276-5329. After scheduling, a 50% deposit of the course fee is required to reserve your date. After paying the deposit, you will receive your course materials which include a course synopsis (including your course book and log book). Please remember there is some required reading and homework to do before you come to class.

Q. How do I pay my deposit for my class so I can get my course materials?

A. Call Stockton State Park Marina at 417-276-5329 to make your deposit with a major credit card. If you need lodging, the marina can assist you in booking your room at this time.

Q. Something important came up! Can I reschedule?

A. If you have paid your deposit and cannot attend on your scheduled date, we will do our best to reschedule. If you cannot reschedule during the current sailing season, we will refund your deposit minus the cost of the books, the credit card fees, and a $50.00 handling fee.

Q. What if there is inclement weather during my scheduled class time?

A. We may have to reschedule. Your safety and the safety of our instructors is important to us.

Q. How is the class instructed?

A. We do private instruction only, from 1-6 people. If we have 4-6 people, we will split up the group so there are only 2-3 people per boat with their own instructor. Tiller time is important to us, as you are here to learn. Class time is typically from 9:00am - 4:00 or 5:00pm. We take an hour for lunch. Development of inclement weather during your class time might require a longer day.

Q. It is time for my class! What can I expect?

A. On the first day of class, you will meet your instructor at the Stockton State Park Marina store. Here you will fill out any necessary paperwork and you will be required to sign an ASA liability waiver before you go on the water.

Q. What should I bring with me?

A. You will want to make sure you wear comfortable clothing. You will also want sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water. Feel free to bring a snack if you wish, but we will come back to the marina for our lunch break.

Please be sure to wear non-marking shoes on the boat.

Q. What type of boat will I be learning on?

A. We teach primarily on a Catalina 25 and a Catalina 27 Keel Boat.

Q. Will I spend the whole day on the water, or is there a written component to my class?

A. For the most part, the class will be hands on. However, there is an easy to understand theoretical component as well. This is presented in your course book. Please visit the American Sailing Association website and read the "Course Standards" (can also be found in your ASA log book) as this will provide guidance as to what you will be tested on.

Q. I have completed my class and passed my test! What now?

A. Congratulations! Upon completion of the ASA 101 course, and as a new sailor receiving instruction through an ASA certified facility, you will receive: (1) A one-year ASA membership and (2) A one-year subscription from SAILING magazine with discount coupons from various sailing related companies. These benefits are included in your course fee and are provided to you directly from the ASA.

Q. I am a more experienced sailor. Can I challenge a course?

A. Experienced sailors wishing to receive ASA certification can challenge the course by demonstrating their sailing skills and passing the written exam for each challenged course. Various fees are charged based on which courses are being challenged. Please email info@stocktonstateparkmarina.com or call 417-276-5329 (after March 1) if you are interested in this option.

Havin' A Crappie Day 5k/Mile FAQs

2014 EVENT REGISTRATION

Q. This sounds interesting. What does the race benefit?

A. This race began in 2010 to help raise funds to implement a trail system into the park. We envision a trail that is open to all ages and abilities and facilitates a learning environment as well. The funds go toward trail implementation and maintenance.

Q. I am not very fast, but I want to participate! Do I have to run?

A. You can run/walk/jog! We welcome all abilities to our event. Walking, running, or whatever you can do is perfect! The park is beautiful in the spring and we hope you take the time to come enjoy it!

Q. I would like to volunteer or become a co-sponsor. How can I help?

A. We appreciate all volunteers and sponsors! Please call Joy Weis at 417-664-3355 or email us at crappieday5k@hotmail.com. We will find a place for you.

Q. I am not from the area and need a place to stay for the night. Any suggestions?

A. Of course! Stockton State Park Marina offers a variety of lodging. Visit our lodging page for more details. Call 417-276-5329 for more information and for reservations.

Q. My dog is my running buddy. Can I bring him/her with me to the race?

A. We love pets, and know how important they are. We welcome dogs at the park, and we do ask that your dog is on a leash at all times. However, due to park and insurance restrictions, we can not allow your 4 legged pal to participate in the race with you. Not everyone is comfortable around animals, and we want all participants to be as comfortable as possible at our event. We have many small children who attend with their families, and we ask that you take this into consideration when deciding whether to bring your dog along. Additionally, we ask that you please pick up after your pet if he/she is accompanying you on race day.

Q. What is the race course like?

A. The 5k course begins and ends at the south shelter near Stockton State Park Marina. The shelter area offers parking, a gazebo and a beautiful view of the lake. Participants will travel from the south shelter into the main park area, where they will then loop the campground area and then loop the sailboat area. Participants will then head back to the south shelter for the finish. The entire course provides a beautiful view of the lake as well as the spring blossoms. The course provides a good mix of hills and flats. It is a good training course for sure. The race directors are both long-time runners and tried to make the course enjoyable for everyone. Just remember - an uphill means a downhill!

Q. Is your race chip-timed?

A. Yes. Both the mile and the 5k are chip timed. This technology allows each runner to have an accurate time for their race (5k or mile). The chip is worn on either the shoe or the bib (race number) and is recorded as the participant crosses a mat or a finish line. We use ActNow Racing as our timing service. www.actnowracing.com

Q. Is this race family-friendly?

A. Yes! We try to make sure all of our park events are family friendly. We encourage you to bring your kids (or your parents). This is a great family event. You'll have a blast enjoying the park together.

Q. Do you offer post-race refreshments?

A. Yes we do. In the past we have offered drinks (water, powerade, etc.) as well as fruit, crackers, and other treats such as granola bars.

Q. Do you offer race shirts?

A. Yes we do. Participants who register by the pre-registration date listed on the entry form will receive a race shirt. Those who register after that date may not receive a race shirt. We will order a few extra shirts to distribute to late registrants and race-day registrants, but those shirts are first come first serve. We advise early registration so you can get a shirt, and because the price is cheaper. PRE-REGISTER BY 3-28-14 FOR THE 2014 EVENT.

Q. I have been training hard for the race, but I do not think I can make it due to an injury or an unusual circumstance. Is my race fee refundable?

A. We do not refund race fees except in extenuating circumstances. We simply consider the race fee a donation. Thank you for your understanding.
